An example of a TeacherGENie generated activity on CENTURY - powered by generative AI and CENTURY's top quality content

Last year, we shared the positive feedback we’d received from teachers across the world using the TeacherGENie feature, which combines generative AI and our exceptional learning materials to create printable worksheets. Since then, schools have been telling us even more about how they have been embedding the feature into their teaching practice. Reedswood Academy recently shared how they’ve been using TeacherGENie in their knowledge checks in science.

How we used CENTURY’s TeacherGENie by Science Lead, Lewis Peatroy

We have an expectation for each class to complete between 2-3 knowledge checks across the wider curricular areas for each module of learning. So I honed in on around 3 or 4 year groups and provided them with a TeacherGENie worksheet for their upcoming focus of learning and informed the staff that they could use this in a variety of ways.

To start with, the main intended way of using TeacherGENie was as a knowledge check. We have 2 hour science lessons where children have the opportunity to complete experiments and/or multiple activities in each lesson.

The children could do the knowledge check at:

  • the start of a lesson based on previous learning or
  • the end of that lesson to assess that day’s or previous learning.

Staff are able to use that information to assess children’s understanding and adapt teaching for the rest of that unit of learning. It also allows staff to adapt resources, plans, slides, etc. for future year groups if they find children are struggling to grasp certain areas of learning.

Another way staff used the questions was as a mini-quiz or mini-plenary for more of an in-the-moment assessment of children’s learning. Based upon that, staff can adapt their teaching and explanations to address misconceptions and assess if there are any groups of children that need additional or focused support.

Moving forward

We’d like to use the generated worksheets as a pre-teach activity for targeted children to help prepare them for upcoming learning. In this instance, the teacher or LSA could generate a worksheet based on the learning from a previous year group to assess the children’s current understanding and address any misconceptions. The teachers could also do this on a whole class level to assess current understanding and if need be, could adapt their upcoming teaching to align with the children’s knowledge. This could also be pitched as a ‘retrieval activity’ to support the children to retrieve their previous knowledge and prepare them to build upon that with the new upcoming learning.

I could also see how the worksheets could be useful for cold/hot writes/activities to get a baseline assessment of children’s knowledge and then an assessment at the end to see the progression of children’s learning.

Quotes

“The AI-generated sheets worked well as a knowledge check. The multiple choice options meant that all of the children could access the questions and I was able to read the questions aloud to help SEND children.” – Year 3 teacher

“We did it as a mini quiz, mid lesson to review the learning. It worked really well.” – Year 5 Teacher

“I was able to generate a knowledge check in seconds. If I felt that a question wasn’t relevant or needed to change I could regenerate a new question instantly. I particularly liked the variety of questions i.e. open ended, multiple choice, etc. and how accessible it can be for ALL of the children. From an adaptive perspective, it was really easy to ensure everyone was catered for including our more able children to children who may have cognitive SEND needs.” – Year 2 Teacher

We’re so pleased the feature is helping us to achieve our aim of making generative AI work for teachers. To learn more about our TeacherGENie feature, book a demo here or speak to your CENTURY account manager.
