Place a learner too high and they may struggle to access the curriculum; place them too low and they may not be sufficiently challenged. An effective ESOL initial assessment needs to do more than produce a test score. It should:

• establish a reliable overall starting level for each learner
• avoid spending unnecessary time on questions that are clearly too easy or too difficult
• align results to ESOL qualification levels
• provide results in real time, to immediately inform initial placement and grouping

The output is a single overall placement level: enough for a teacher to make a confident, evidence-informed starting point for grouping and placement.

How does the ESOL Smart IA work?

The ESOL Smart IA works in the same way as CENTURY’s other adaptive initial assessments: each question a learner answers helps determine which question they see next.

Rather than asking every learner the same forty or fifty questions, the assessment adapts to their responses, narrowing in on their current level more efficiently than a static test.

For tutors, that means a credible starting point on day one with no marking. For learners, it means an assessment that meets them closer to where they actually are, rather than spending unnecessary time on questions pitched well above or below their level.

The reading content itself is quality-assured against official assessment materials, so it reflects the kinds of texts learners encounter outside the classroom: adverts, notices, letters, articles, recipes and everyday instructions, rather than abstract comprehension passages built purely for a test.

Built with Ascentis, based on the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum

An assessment is only as useful as the standards behind it. The ESOL Smart IA is:

• Aligned to the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum, providing the framework against which learners’ reading performance is assessed.
• Mapped to Ascentis ESOL Skills for Life (Reading), from Ascentis, an Ofqual-regulated awarding organisation, and created from sample Ascentis questions.
• Quality-assured against official assessment materials, and in partnership with Ascentis, helping ensure that the assessment reflects a recognised external standard rather than relying solely on an internally developed framework.

This means the placement level determined by the ESOL Smart IA is directly informed by, and relevant to, the specification.

What an ESOL initial assessment tells you, and what it doesn’t tell you

An initial assessment provides an important starting point, but it is only one part of understanding an ESOL learner.

The ESOL Smart IA is designed to establish a learner’s overall reading placement level against the Adult ESOL Core Curriculum. It is not intended to provide a complete picture of every skill or factor that may affect a learner’s progress.

For example, a placement assessment on its own does not provide the same detailed picture of individual skills and misconceptions as diagnostic assessment, nor does a reading assessment assess every aspect of a learner’s English language ability.

That’s why placement is the first step rather than the end point. Once a learner’s overall level has been established, CENTURY’s diagnostic assessments can identify the specific areas where they need further support, helping tutors move from “What level is this learner?” to “What does this learner need to work on next?”
