CENTURY’s project to help educate Syrian refugees in the Middle East has been recognised as a finalist of UNESCO’s prestigious ICT in Education Prize.
This global United Nations scheme recognises innovative education technology projects aimed at expanding educational and lifelong learning opportunities for all.
This year’s prize focuses on the use of artificial intelligence to innovate education, teaching and learning. An international jury assessed 113 projects nominated by UNESCO National Members and chose two laureates and eight finalists.
The jury shortlisted CENTURY as among the top 10 projects, recognising in particular CENTURY’s work to use AI to improve education for Syrian refugees in the Middle East.
In September 2018, CENTURY was invited by the Lebanese Ministry of Education to use its AI in state schools educating large numbers of refugees displaced by the conflict in Syria. The project was warmly welcomed by Minister Hamadeh, the Lebanese Minister for Education, who said: “This exciting opportunity to use artificial intelligence in our schools is very timely from our perspective, as the effective use of technology is a common element across every theme that the Ministry of Education and Higher Education is working on.”
Two years later during the coronavirus pandemic, CENTURY has gone on to offer its technology for free to all schools and families in the country.
